PathPlay: Social Fitness App

Interactive mobile prototype built in Figma

Project Overview

PathPlay is a social fitness app that transforms daily walking into an engaging, community-driven experience. This mobile app concept demonstrates my expanding skill set in UX/UI design, moving beyond traditional Learning & Development tools to create user-centered digital experiences.

Design Challenge and Solution

As a design exploration, I identified an opportunity to reimagine how fitness apps could better support user engagement through social connection. While many existing fitness apps emphasize individual metrics and achievements, this concept investigates how community-driven features might create more sustainable motivation for daily walking.

PathPlay represents a design experiment in social-first fitness experiences. The concept centers around custom step challenges where users can invite friends and track collective progress through real-time updates and group chat functionality. This approach explores how to balance social engagement with personal achievement, incorporating gamified elements like visual progress indicators and streak tracking to demonstrate sustainable engagement patterns without interface complexity.

The design challenge was creating an interface that feels socially connected without being overwhelming – allowing users to benefit from community motivation while maintaining individual goal flexibility.

Design Approach

I developed a cohesive color palette using calming greens for primary actions and neutral tones for content hierarchy. Typography prioritizes readability across different screen sizes, while interactive elements provide clear feedback states. The app centers around four primary functions: activity tracking, challenge management, friend connections, and personal profiles, with each screen maintaining consistent navigation patterns.

Key actions like creating challenges or viewing friend progress require minimal steps. The interface reduces cognitive load through logical grouping and familiar interaction patterns, optimizing for thumb navigation and one-handed mobile use.

Key Features

The authentication flow includes clean welcome screens with multiple sign-up options and consistent branding. The “Walk. Connect. Compete” tagline immediately communicates the app’s social focus. The home dashboard balances personal progress with social elements, showing step counts, active challenges, and friend activity in a single view that encourages both individual achievement and community engagement.

The challenge management system allows comprehensive customization with step goals, duration settings, and friend invitations. Real-time chat within challenges, friend invitation systems, and progress comparison features maintain privacy while encouraging healthy social interaction around fitness goals.

Technical Considerations

All screens optimize for mobile-first design with interactive elements meeting accessibility standards. Consistent design tokens for colors, spacing, and typography create maintainable interface patterns, while components like challenge cards and friend lists adapt to different content lengths.

Future development opportunities include integration with health apps and wearable devices, advanced analytics for personal and group progress, notification systems for challenge updates, and expanded social features like achievement sharing.

Skills Showcased

This project demonstrates interface design, component system development, and social interaction design. Moving beyond traditional instructional design tools, I created a cohesive mobile app experience that balances individual needs with community engagement.
